GuardianUK "I don't really know how accepted I am," says Robert Pattinson as he sips on an enormous paper cup of Coke. "Nothing ever matters to me apart from the people with negative opinions. That's literally it. That always drives me on to the next thing. It's funny, you just focus on them and then the next movie. That's the only thing you're thinking about when it comes out."
For someone with the world at his feet – he has the Twilight franchise behind him and David Cronenberg's icy drama Cosmopolis as his next release – Pattinson gives a good impression of a man plagued with self-doubt. "I've never really taken myself seriously as an actor," he says, fresh off a plane from Germany, where, he notes by the by, everybody seems to hate him.
"It is surprising the amount of people who think I'm going to be really dumb," he says. "I think they think anyone who has done teen movies is just an idiot. I don't know, maybe I am. Some of the best actors, if you talk to them, they're not the smartest people in the world."

Let's talk about Cosmopolis. It's a game-changer for you...
I saw it and I liked it. I don't normally like my stuff but I didn't really recognise myself.
How did David Cronenberg guide your performance?
We both started out not really knowing exactly what it was about but knowing it was interesting. I was trying to prepare for it, but the time it felt most right [while filming] was when you didn't know what you were doing. David had this uncanny sense of seeing when I didn't know what I was doing and that was always the take that he liked.
There's a scene where you have an anal examination...
David told me that the shot was going to be from between my legs. He knew I was a young actor trying to look I was willing to do anything for the job. He was like, "I want to shoot it... and just cup the frame with your balls at the top." I genuinely believed him and had to go to his trailer and say, "I dunno if I can do that..."
Was taking the film out ot Cannes a validation for you?
It's amazing. I was so terrified to do it at the beginning and thought I was going to fuck it up and everyone's going to say "Cronenberg's sold out..." so to get it at Cannes is the coolest thing ever. Getting the movie, getting it to Cannes and getting the movie I got recently are three of the happiest moments of my life.
Speaking of the next movie...
I'm doing Mission: Blacklist with Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire who made Johnny Mad Dog. Hopefully that'll shoot in Iraq, which will be fun. Then I'm doing Rover with [Animal Kingdom's] David Michôd.
And Breaking Dawn: Part 2 - what can fans expect?
It's one of the funniest ones out of all of them. I think Bill [Condon, director] has really captured the absurdity of it.
Will it be a relief not to go back to being Edward Cullen?
A relief not to put the contact lenses in. It's been absolutely awful having those stupid things in my eyes. Even if they said, "We'll give you a billion dollars to do ti again," I don't know that I'd want to!

CANNES, FRANCE—Robert Pattinson swears he can tell how people are enjoying his movies by how many coughs he hears from the audience.He employed this unique gauge at the May 25 Cannes Film Festival world premiere of Cosmopolis, his new movie directed by David Cronenberg.“I watched it at the screening last night, but I wasn’t even watching,” Pattinson, 26, tells a roundtable of journalists.“I was just listening for every cough: Please don’t cough! Please don’t cough!”He seems awfully nervous for one so successful. He’s the lead star of the Twilight franchise, playing moody vampire Edward Cullen, a role that has made him famous and rich. Pattinson also had a small role in another big film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.He’s neither new at this game nor naïve. Could he really suffer from self-doubt?“Oh, completely,” he says, sucking on a lollipop for sustenance.“I want that the whole time. Even for this screening. I was pissed off about everything, completely worried, incredibly stressful thing. But my manager was like, ‘You’re not happy at all?’ No, no, people are all coughing! They’re coughing because they’re bored!“It’s f---ing crazy. Coughing! It’s all I can think about. But I like that. You’ve got to burn. As soon as you start thinking you’re good, you’re s--t. So yeah, it’s an annoying way to live, but yeah.”
ROB AND CRONENBERG TALKS 'MAPS TO THE STARS' WITH EW
For those of you who don’t get how David Cronenberg would want to work with Robert Pattinson, just look at Breaking Dawn. If Bella’s pregnancy doesn’t count as a prime example of Cronenbergian body horror, then I don’t know what does. And now, it appears that Pattinson and Cronenberg are hoping to pair up once more following their upcoming Cosmopolis. Pattinson confirmed to EW that he’s attached to the director’s long-gestating Maps to the Stars — although he’s not sure when they would begin production. “I don’t know if I’m doing it next,” he says. Cronenberg has stated that he hopes to cast frequent collaborator Viggo Mortensen as well.The film would be based on a script by novelist and screenwriter Bruce Wagner, who has also written an adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s novel, As She Climbed Across the Table, for Cronenberg. “It’s about child stars,” says Pattinson of Wagner’s script. “It’s very funny. It’s very, very dark.”Cosmopolis, which is based on a 2003 Don DeLillo novel, debuted two weeks ago at the Cannes Film Festival.

ROB AND CRONENBERG INTERVIEW WITH NEW TORONTO
Now Toronto Robert Pattinson wasn’t expecting to star in Cosmopolis. In point of fact, he didn’t think a director like David Cronenberg would even consider him for the project.
“I never really took myself seriously as an actor before,” he says, barely awake the morning after the movie’s gala Toronto premiere. “And [then] you get cast in a movie like this, and it gets to Cannes and it’s not a total disaster, and I haven’t brought down David’s entire career…”
Cronenberg’s eyes crinkle. “We’ll see,” the director says. “That’s still in the future.”
On the verge of burning out after shooting the two-part Twilight finale, Breaking Dawn, Pattinson had been thinking seriously about pulling back from movies.
“I was fully intending on hiding for a couple of years,” Pattinson says. “I only wanted to do small parts. The time is gone – for me, especially – when you could learn on the job. I mean, even the idea of going to a repertory company or something – everybody’s going to be filming it on their phone, and it’s exactly the same thing in movies pretty much. So I wanted to try to do small parts in movies I thought I could learn something from. But then this came up.”

Looking casual in slacks and shirts at a downtown Toronto hotel, the dapper filmmaker and handsome baseball cap-wearing leading man are making themselves available to promote the film, which exposes modern-day obsessions with greed and power.
But Cronenberg said that Cosmopolis is less an excuse for socio-political diatribes and more about an opportunity to present a fresh story. And yes, the 69-year-old understands that the film hits screens as anti-capitalist protests abound worldwide.
The movie, based on the 2003 Don DeLillo novel, tracks the bizarre day in the life of young Manhattan billionaire investor Eric Packer (Pattinson).

ROB'S INTERVIEW WITH LE MONDE - TALKS COSMOPOLIS AND THE ROVER
LeMonde The limo in which travels the powerful trader (played by Robert Pattinson), on an apocalyptic morning in New York, - where he sees from time to time the world he thought he possessed, slipping through his fingers - felt for a long time like a coffin for the actor, who though he would never get out of.
"Cronenberg disguised me with sunglasses. You have no idea how unsettling it is for an actor to be deprived of their eyes. Then the limo became the center of the film, where all the actors would appear in, one by one. Like Juliette Binoche, for example, who I never thought I would meet one day. That is when, I finally felt liked I existed. It might have been the first time."
When he auditioned for The Rover, the next David Michod (the Australian director of Animal Kingdom, one of the most remarkable police movie of the decade): "I waited for seven hours, but I made it. They chose me and it's going to be a great movie."When he said that, he held his head high with the pride of someone who landed the role using his teeth, aware that nothing will be offered to him on a plate.
