RUPERT SANDERS' TALKS KRISTEN AND SWATH WITH THE HERALD SUN

The  HeraldSunAU has an new article up on their site. Kristen’s quotes are from previous interviews (FilmInk)but Rupert Sander's quotes are new.

Stewart was always first choice for the lead, Sanders says. "Obviously everyone knew about Kristen. She was someone we wanted to meet," Sanders says, standing outside one of his 30 astounding sets.

"We started, as you do in these things, looking around. (The film's producer) Joe (Roth) had just made Alice in Wonderland, where he had found a new actress (Mia Wasikowska) and we felt there was something very innocent and pure about finding someone with no other roles that you associate them with. But when we went to meet Kristen it was a very simple, done deal. Yes, you are the one."

Coincidentally the unknown actor they turned down for the role, Lily Collins - the raven-haired daughter of Phil Collins - was cast as Snow White in the rival Mirror, Mirror.

Based on the trailer, his version of Snow White is a visual feast. Sixty per cent was shot in real locations, including a deserted Welsh beach and some woodland in London's Queen's Park. The sets, including the evil queen's milk bath and a snow-covered woodland, are breathtakingly real.

"There's quite a lot you're nervous about when you start a project of this scale," Sanders admits."I wanted to create a world where this all felt tangible and it didn't feel like fantasy but felt real."

He adds that his mantra throughout the project was to make a film "that means something" and is true to the original, seven-page story. "People think Snow White is Disney," Sanders says."Disney really made the Grimm's fairy tale very family orientated.But it is a very dark story about so many deeper issues that were never in the Disney version. It's like a biblical tale almost, with a lot of messages and hidden meanings. It's a story that is as resonant today as it was when it was first recorded."

How to explain the enduring allure of fairy tales, Snow White and the Huntsman' star, Kristen Stewart puts it this way "When good overtakes evil, it just feels f*cking good."

"Rupert beat me up." Stewart jokes. "He definitely threw me off cliffs and made me trudge through frigid, icy waters. It looks so cool, though. I can actually see the pain and discomfort on my face. It's awesome." 

Sanders definitely appreciated Stewart's perseverance, "What's great about Kristen is that is that its one thing to be like, 'I'll jump off a building'. Its another thing to s--- scared about jumping and then go ahead and do it', says the director. "She didn't want to ride horses and ultimately she rode in front of 200 horses galloping at full speed across the beach in front of an army. She's very brave."

Although Snow White And The Huntsman began with a strong script, it would seem that the cast would bring considerable life to the characters via their portrayals. "I wanted to make a big, epic medieval fable, very much within that world, but also wanted it to relate to the people of today," Sanders says, "all of those actors have such a cutting edge modernity that even if they're existing in world that's very well described and historic, they still imbue the film with the sense of modernity. Kristen Stewart is really strong as Snow White. She makes such great instinctual decisions and truly inhabits her character. It helped me to write her character, spending time with her, seeing the character through her eyes. She was an intrinsic part of creating the character."

The paps left in cars BEFORE she did, by about 5 mins. Maybe she did not go straight home and the paps gave up. Just JB, her security. ASB and dark haired guy left earlier. She left REALLY late, like 3.15am. Hope she had fun :) The 9 people were JB, JohnASB, dark haired guy .... plus about 4-6 others I did not know. All shielding her... hard to get pics.  She had her hair down, short jacket and hoodie, skinny jeans and converse. Saw her for seconds before she went in, but YES!!!!

SWATH SCREENWRITER,EVAN DAUGHERTY TALKS SWATH AND KRISTEN

Collider I think the teaser did a pretty decent job of showing that it was a different take on the story, for sure. When you were writing, did you have anyone in mind for the part of Snow White? If you were writing or back in 2003, surely you weren’t thinking of Kristen Stewart for the role back then, right?

EVAN DAUGHERTY: Not really. That was more in the era of Keira Knightley, but funnily enough, and I think I was telling this to Kristen, but…I wrote Snow White shortly after Panic Room came out. And when we were just hanging around the dorms with my buddies talking about the movie, I think I did say that Kristen Stewart would be good for the role. Obviously, she’d need to be a little older, but it would take a few years to get the movie made. I mean, that was her first big thing—Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room.

Collider: I always forget she was in that.

DAUGHERTY: Well, y’know, she’s really young, and she’s got super-short hair. But it’s a great movie, and she had to carry quite a bit of…y’know, there’s only, like, four people in that movie. That’s a pretty big acting load for that age.

Collider: Cool. Now, Kristen Stewart’s a wildly popular actress amongst the Twilight set, and Snow White’s a popular story with children. But for every two Twilight fans, there’s probably one Twilight…uh…non-fan. How are you planning to convince all the Twilight haters and non-fairy-tale fans that they need to come out to theaters to see another Snow White? Do you anticipate any difficult getting adult males into theaters for this?

DAUGHERTY: Well, that’s a very good and salient point you make. Because it is based on a fairy tale, and it does have a female lead. But one of the great things about this sort of project—and one of the reasons I think they wanted to make it—was that this movie isn’t just about Snow White. It’s called Snow White and The Huntsman, because you’ve got Kristen Stewart being mentored by Chris Hemsworth, who’s sort of doing his badass Thor thing. But instead of hammers, he’s got axes. So, I think the teaser kind of speaks for itself. I think it’s kind of a tough, muscular, gritty…and, by the way, I’ve visited the set, and I can tell you that this is a pretty badass Kristen Stewart that you haven’t seen before. So, hopefully, I’d say look at that teaser. Up until now, when I’ve told my peers—guys in their 20’s and 30’s—that I was working on a Snow White action movie, they were kind of like, “OK, yeah, well, good luck with that”. But after the teaser was up, I posted that to my Facebook or whatever, and they were like—hopefully honestly—“wow, this actually looks pretty cool”.
